CSI Chicago: Attributes of a Successful Software Forensics Solutions

Tom Ticknor, QAI Global Institute

About the Topic

$6,800,000,000,000 ($6.8 trillion USD) is the estimated ANNUAL costs of IT failures globally. If "IT failure" was a country, it would have a GDP surpassed only by the USA and China ($16.2T and $8.3T respectively). $6.8 trillion equates to well over $500 billion (yes with a B) per month. What could the world do with an extra $500 billion per month? LOTS! Unfortunately, too often our response to failing or struggling IT projects is just to accept it as the cost of doing business in a complex world. This might have been true at some point in IT history, but now with software and systems buried deep in almost every aspect of our lives, our once voracious "risk appetite" might now be ready for a "low risk diet". Ok, so where do we start? Simply put, it is about getting back to basics. We need to learn how to know what we don't know and to learn to investigate. Much like the NTSB has their Crash Site Investigators, our IT organizations must develop and embed Software Process Failure Investigators skills within all aspects of the ALM.

In his talk, Tom will provide an overview of the Software Forensic Analysis (SFA) process and focus on the six critical attributes of a successful forensics solution. Attendees to the presentation will leave with a clear understanding of what it takes to embed a "forensic solution" within their organization.

Key Learning Objectives

  • The cost of IT failures to the global economy … the problem
  • Other industry processes to reduce failure
  • Six critical attributes of a successful forensics solution
