Making Your QA Metrics & Measurements Matter

Jessica Parker, PMP

About the Topic

Consider the difference in impact between these two statements about a semi-fictional e-Commerce website:

  • In 9 out of the last 12 builds deployed to QA, there were blocking defects.
  • In 9 out of the last 12 builds deployed to QA, QA was unable to place orders on the site.

Both statements are factually accurate but it’s the second one that will get the attention from your team to ensure that the remaining builds have a working order flow when deployed to QA.

During test cycles, lots of metrics and measurements (data) are collected and reported, like test case execution status and defect counts with severity.  However, this information is only valuable if it has meaning to the person receiving it and an effective message (story). Effective visual representations can support your story and convey information at a glance.  Since the average attention span is about 5 seconds, that glance may be the only chance you have to get your point across.

Key Learning Objectives

In this interactive session, you’ll learn:

    • Techniques to analyze and identify the message you want your metrics and measurements to convey
    • Strategies for creating an effective visualization for your data (including some free online tools)
    • How to frame the story of your data to effectively communicate key messages
