The agile model did not just change the process of delivering quality software, but the very definition of what software means. It requires more than adopting new processes like Scrum and DevOps - it requires a complete mind shift. Our goal as technology professionals while adapting to the change is to not give in or compromise on Quality and retain the Customer First mindset.
According to the "Theory of Constraints", a chain is not stronger than its weakest link. This is reinforced by Gene Kim in "The Phoenix Project", who said that "Any improvements made anywhere besides the bottleneck are an illusion". Any manual process in the Software Development Lifecycle will prevent the continuous build, test, deploy cycle and will either extend the time-to-market or will keep growing the technical debt.
The first step in the transformation process is identifying the bottlenecks in the current process. While it sounds like a long, tedious exercise, involving meetings and interviews with different groups across organization and analysis of data - it doesn’t have to be. There are great tools available which can help to facilitate this discovery process, while encouraging innovative thinking and making it fun and extremely productive. I would like to talk about these tools and techniques such as Mind Maps, innovation games such as Speed Boat and how they can be used to identify, prioritize, and resolve Continuous Delivery bottlenecks.
